This is a great read but there are a few caveats that one should be aware of Laurence Stallings served in the war as an officer with the United States Marines He lost one of his legs due to an injury received during the Battle of Belleau Wood So he knows what he is writing about However I must stress that The Doughboys is not a piece of meticulously researched military history with all the details that we have come to expect from modern historians Rather it s an account of the war that he and his fellow soldiers and marines experienced It s a very emotional book in many ways but at times it isn t the most historically accurate bookMr Stallings had career as a playwright novelist and screenwriter after the war This book is full of vivid imagery and a sweeping vision Much like what one would expect from a screenwriter in the 1930 s and 1940 s Melodramatic over the top and very enjoyable It s a great piece of writing buttruth be told full of uestionable data The reader feels like he or she is at staff meetings standing next to the various commanders and accompanying the soldiers in battle The book is heavy with the you are there type of exposition writing but checking some of the facts shows that in some cases they can t be verified or that they are incorrect For example when describing Capt Sam Woodfill s Medal of Honor exploits on the battlefield Stallings writes that at one point in the battle Woodfill penned a poignant letter to his wife and baby daughter Woodfill was trapped in a shellhole and believed he wasn t going to make it Very touching but Woodfill and his wife never had children Ever Did Stallings have research material that was just wrong or was he embellishing because it made for a better account Anything is possible but there are no footnotes to refer to Stallings obviously did his research but I suspect that Mr Stallings wasn t against the occasional embellishment if it added to the bookAnyone who has read Thomas B Costain or Winston Churchill s historical works will know what I m talking about With many of the older style historians there are times when the writing wanders into the territory of the novel Mr Stallings went to college in the years before the USA became involved in World War One His education was probably classical and from a different era In his day it was about the mood and emotions than getting the facts right When the legend becomes fact print the legendDespite these faults I like the book I feel the writing conveys the spirit and attitude of the World War One generation when it was young The generation that grew up when Teddy Roosevelt was president all technological advances were scientific and things were only getting better not worse The generation that later served as the leaders during World War II The admirals generals colonels senators and business tycoons There aren t many books like this and I recommend The Doughboys highly despite it s age It s still a good read Keep in mind that it was published in 1963 and is very hard to find It s worth the search but be patient You might have to spend some money to get your copy

There are a few interesting stories in this book which I have not come across before and the author definitely has an interesting perspective on events and people that were involved in WWI However there were too many sentences and snippets that just didn't fit and didn't have enough context for me to even comprehend what he was trying to say Also the author's use of metaphors often left me wondering whether he
