Els would be labeled autistic but they don't so they just label him Mal And don't even get started on the new weirdness going on between his two best friends Cyn and HeyMan Master talent Pete Hautman has cooked up a rich narrative shot through with eual parts humor and tenderness and the result is a middle grade novel too delicious to put dow Ordinarily I d avoid anything to do with competitive eating I mean it grosses me out And I m wincing as I type this So why did I think I d go anywhere near this book Well it came into the bookshop and I looked at it and thought Nobody s ever going to buy that None of us staff are ever going to recommend it And I thought about the extraordinary number of good books that hardly ever get read and that certainly don t get the readership that they deserve simply because they slip through the cracks A book has to be read by someone the right someone and recommended to the right someone and then talked about etc etc So in my attempt to solve the problems of the world well to assist some authors in making a bit profit than they might I challenge myself every now and then to read a book that I d normally ignoreThus thisThis book is a good story David believes himself to be only good at one thing eating He thinks his parents have little interest in him his older sister is a straight A student his younger brother is a non verbal autistic child except to help mind his brother David follows the stars of competitive eating and one day decides to bid on a half hot dog it s famous read the book for the details He borrows his mother s credit card puts it on auto bid for 20 and forgets to put the decimal point in There s a moral lesson in this book There s also a good deal of humour and some really nice stuff with regards to caring for siblings and with regards to friendship I didn t get grossed out once because it s all written in the first person and Dave is a likable kid I shall definitely be recommending this to customers

One thing I found interesting in this book is that the reason why he is under all this stress and pressure is because of the thing he loves most speed eating He got into all the trouble because he wanted to buy something related to speed eating and in the end he makes up for his mistake by getting better and winning at speed eating
